Stephen King as written over 60 books and of those sixty books many of them became huge grossing movies. Stephen King began writing for Doubleday Publishing in 1974, the first book he published with them was Carrie. Carrie was out in movie theaters in 1976. It was directed by Brian De Palma and starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving and John Travolta. The plot was about a girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers and fights back on prom night on those who hate her. It was a great movie. The movie and the book were very similar. In 1979, the Vampire classic Salem’s Lot starring David Soul.

The next book to be turned into a movie was The Shining  in 1980. This movie starred Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval. In 1982, Creepshow was released , this was the first book that was made into a movie that had several different storylines in one film.  Cujo came out in 1983 which starred Dee Wallace Stone, Daniel Hugh Kelly and Danny Pintaro. Firestarter came next in 1984 which starred Drew Barrymore.

Also in 1983, The Dead Zone starred Christopher Walken and Brooke Adams. This movie was about a man who had been in a coma for many years finally awakens and has the power to see the future. Again in 1983, Christine was  released. This movie starred Keith Gordon and Alexandra Paul. This movie was about a possessed car. There are too many movies to give a description on, but other films that were made from books are Children of the Corn, Silver Bullet,  Maximum Overdrive, Stand by Me, Creepshow 2, A Return to Salem’s Lot. Pet Sematary was a huge hit. This movie starred Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby and Fred Gwynne.

Another great movie was IT which came out in 1990. This movie starred Tim Curry as IT. This movie was about a killer clown that only hunted children because they were the only ones that believed in him. The movie was in two parts, the first part was about 7 friends who met as kids who” killed” it but promised to come back to Derry, Maine if IT came back.
